Sex Education information session for Year 6 parents/carers

19 October 2023 (by admin)

Dear Year 6 Parents and Carers,

When your child was in Year 5, they participated in two Relationship and Health (RHE) sessions, covering the statutory Science and Health education topics of:

  • Puberty - changes in both girls and boys
  • Menstruation
  • Wet dreams

In addition to our statutory RHE curriculum, non-statutory Sex Education objectives are included in our Year 6 curriculum provision. These are:

  • I can explain what pregnancy means, how long it lasts and where it occurs, i.e. that a baby is made when a sperm (male) meets an egg/ovum (female) and then the fertilised egg settles into the lining of the uterus or womb (female).
  • I can explain what sexual intercourse is, and explain that this may be one part of an intimate relationship between consenting adults.

(DfE note within our RHE policy: sex education will not be statutory in primary schools; however, the new statutory guidance makes clear that schools should still provide a programme of age appropriate sex education)

The Year 6 pupils’ Sex Education session will take place on Tuesday 5th December and as it is non-statutory component to the RHE curriculum, parental right to withdrawal is permitted.

To assist you in follow up conversations with your child, or to decide if you are withdrawing your child from the Sex Education session, we would like to invite you to our parent information session, held in the School Hall on Friday 17th November from 9.30am (This follows the residential meeting, where details were sent out to you yesterday). During this Sex Ed. presentation, we will explain the contents of the lesson taken by the children, and share with you all resources being used.

Please see our RHE policy, on our School’s website, for more details on the RHE curriculum (including request for withdrawal procedures).

With kind regards,

Mr Bateman
